Day 10 Photo Challenge: Something I Made

I love to sew.  Creating something unique, interesting and just making something with my own two hands and a bit of my imagination is a bit of a thrill.  I also love buying fabric.  Its becoming an addiction and I have to justify the purchase of all that fabric with wonderful goodies that I've made.

That said, my photo for today is of one of my absolute favorite projects I've made.  There were multiple attempts to make this, and the final version is almost perfect.  My wristlet is used a great deal (as you might be able to see from the stain on the front and the wearing at the top seams.)  I need to work on making a new one, as I've been carrying this one non-stop for over 3 months!  In purse time, that's like decades.  Wow.

So, here it is, my wristlet.  Hope you like it!

My new bag, my new bag....

Yes, I'm very excited to have finally finished my purse.  I love it and am so thrilled to begin using it tomorrow.  Can't wait to show it off!  So, while I'm working on my tutorial (though, really does anyone care?) I thought I'd post a few pictures of the bag itself.

I made it my style with one outside pocket for my Blackberry, 3 inside pockets for lots of stuff and the entire thing is BIG.  I like big.  The closure is a button, since I haven't quite figured out how to put the magnetic snaps on yet.  (I'm working on that.)  Anyway, I like it and if no one else does, that's alright.  Its mine anyways!

Enjoy!

Here she is.  I love the frog on the fabric.  He looks so sweet and friendly.  Sorry he's upside down, just one of several mistakes on the entire bag.  But, its home made so it won't be perfect, just unique.

The front of the bag.  Frogs, bikes, watering cans, flowers, trees.  So much cute stuff on this fabric.

The back of the bag with a small pocket just right for my BB.  Love that purple.
All the items I cram in my bag.  The bottom left is a home made wristlet I LOVE and will only stop carrying when it breaks or I make a new one.  In the middle on the bottom the pink case with flowers is my camera in its home made designed case.  Also in the same row on the top is the Notepad Holder I made from The Cottage Home website.  Love everything she designs.  I have made at least four things from her tutorial.  Check out her blog, its posted on the right.  Its always amazing to see how much stuff you have in your purse.  Items that were cleaned out but did not make it into the new bag included: various receipts, 2 golf balls, a plastic toy bug, a bag of quarters, prewrap for my knee, toothbrush and paste, 2 pairs of socks, and a length of ribbon.  Odd, but true.

And finally a picture of the lovely strawberries I had for lunch.  Today was a very lazy day, but in a great way.  My knee is giving me a bit of trouble and I took the day off to rest up for tomorrow's field trip.  Don't actually know that it helped, but this pain sucks.  I am very resentful right now of my poor stomach that will not allow me to take pain meds.  Ick.  But these strawberries were delicious and I enjoyed sitting on the couch and working on some sewing while watching movies.

Day 9 Photo Challenge: Self Portrait without Face

I just made the finishing touches on my new purse.  I'm really proud.  Its big, which is what I like and the fabric I used is so cute, pretty, bright and fun!  I Love It!!  So, since I was taking lots of pictures of my purse for a tutorial I'm working on, I decided to include it in my photo challenge picture for today.

I am sans knee wrap (as I've spent almost all day at home on the couch b/c it was really hurting today.)  I don't like to have it on unless I'm walking so staying still at home and watching movies allows me to be wrap free.

Anyway, not a great picture as it was taken with my blackberry, but it'll do.  Enjoy!

Just a thought...excuse my ramblings

I just watched a video.  The sponsor of the video wasn't someone I'd usually be all about, but the message was. Moments.  Simple, real moments in life are what really matter.  As most of you know (cause I whine a lot) things haven't been going great for me lately.  But, when I stop and think through today and the past few weeks, months and years, I know I am blessed.  Almost everyday I GET to be with kids.  Not always as much as I'd like, but they're still there.  In some moments we're giggling, having fun, playing, teasing, running, and just enjoying each other.  Those are easy moments to love. But, I realize too that moments, of which I had several today, that are challenging & frustrating, are at their base teaching moments for many of us.

One of my kids today just didn't want to listen.  I was sitting in my office and could hear the exchange back and forth with a counselor.  The whining, the crying from the child.  The raised voice and the frustration from the adult.  Finally, knowing things were going from bad to worse, I stopped what I was doing and went out.

My office is on the second floor.  There's a half wall that allows me to stand and peer down into the lower lobby where my kids go back and forth from activities, the restroom, the lunch room, etc.  I hear a lot in that hallway (and they know it.)  I went to the wall and looked down.  He was standing there, mad and crying. I could see my employee frustrated and upset.  It was a battle of wills.  No one was going to win.  I, in what is commonly referred to as my 'Miss April Voice' called down.  'What's the problem?'  The staff member explained that the child wouldn't listen and go get changed in the bathroom after pool time.  Now, I hate this part.  Not that it isn't effective; is what should happen; and does what is right; but because I hate that usually above all when every one esle is ignored, they listen to me.  'Go, now!'

In that tone of voice, with those simple words, he goes.  I head downstairs to have a 'chat' with him afterwards.  This is a moment.  An important moment.  Knowing that I'm making a difference in his life.  I'm the authority and you can't just do whatever you want.  Someone is going to come along and you'll have to listen.  A lot of times at my center, that's me.  I forget how important that is. Not making him go change, not using that 'voice' but, helping him learn an order and structure for life, that is important.  It may be the mores of a common society; laws of an organized community; or most importantly, God's 'rules.'  But in the end its important.

I'm greatfull I have this opportunity.  That I, even when its frustrating and tiring, get to have the chance to help them learn.  I always try to keep this in mind, and I have to remember even in these frustrating moments, how important it is to help my children become a part of a community.  That's what I want at the end of the day, to know that we are 'raising' a group of people who will make a healthy, meaningful, important mark on society.  That's what matters.  Not his happiness (we're not always gonna be happy in life), not my comfort or happiness; but what is best for everyone.  Community.  Thank you for this moment.

Day 8 Photo Challenge: Technology

So lately my 'BB' and I haven't been getting along very well.  She has developed a tendancy to freeze up and I'm not fond of that.  She also doesn't like to get my work emails (though I'm beginning to see that as a WONDERFUL THING!)

However, for better, for worse, I adore her and she is my very own Blackberry.  Taking pictures, shooting video, surfing the web, playing music, helping me work out, (when I'm not wounded-by the way the MRI on my knee is tomorrow), playing games, help me find my way anywhere, assist me with my shopping (I like to make lists) and helping me to keep track of so many important facts, documents and days in my life.   Oh, and by the way, it sends texts, emails AND makes & receives phone calls too!  A-MAZ-ING!!

BB, I do love you and can't imagine how I would keep track of myself (or my life!) without you!  Cheers! (And yes, I am a little crazy.  My doctor knows and we're dealing with that. Thank you.)

Day 7 Photo Challenge: Something new

Well, I would like to have a photo of the something new I've been working on all day.  But, my new purse is not yet finished and won't be for a while, so that will have to wait.  (I will include a preview with this post though.)

So, for my picture for the challenge today this is my photo:

My new mug and photo frame from Hilton Head.  Thanks Mom & Dad!  I have really been into turtles lately and LOVE these!  Sea Turtles are so beautiful.  Now I just need a nice picture to go in the frame.  Mom said she's going to print me out one of Her & Dad with Nick and Paul on vacation.  Sounds so great!
Now for a preview of my new purse.  Are you excited yet?!!!

Fabulous Fabrics!  It is going to be sooooo pretty!  Maybe tomorrow I'll have it done and you'll be able to see how awesome it is!

Photo Challenge: 1-6

I'm going to do the first few challenges all in one post.  I've taken lots of pictures today, and I'm not sure all of them are very good!  Anyhow, enjoy, if you can!

That's me.  Not my best looking day, but not bad for as sweaty as I am in this heat!

What I wore today. Two things I chose to highlight: my leg wrap (Thanks Dad for this great wrap!) & my pretty pink toenail polish.  I LOVE nail polish but usually only wear it on my toes since when I wear it on my fingers it chips so easily!

Clouds.  There was a nasty storm (and possibly there will be more) that came through about an hour ago.  Ominous clouds!

Periwinkle!!!!  Favorite color ever.  And this photo is a prelude to another photo in the bunch!

Someone I Love.  How could I chose one?  I adore all of them and since they're not here, I took a picture of their pictures.  These are all about 1 year to 18 month pictures.  None of them are that age any longer, but they will always be my babies.
Favorite childhood memory: Barbie all the way.  I have so many memories of Barbie.  (Barbara Millicent Roberts, to be exact!)  I love thinking about how I wished for a Barbie as a present for every birthday, Christmas and just ALWAYS!!!!  I also love to think about my Barbie dream house: Playing under the dining room table with the chairs for rooms.  I love you Barbie and always will!
